How to Avoid Heartburn

Most people have experienced occasional heartburn, that burning sensation in the stomach and chest usually accompanied by bloating, gas and even a sour taste in the throat. What causes this feeling and reaction is when the stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) backs up and enters the esophagus causing the tissue to become irritated.

Let me make this a little easier to understand. (Health Science educator hat is on). There is a muscle that acts like a valve that opens and closes at the top of the stomach that normally pinches shut so the acid does not back up into the stomach.  When the muscle (esophageal sphincter) is not properly functioning, the hydrochloric acid backs up into the esophagus and causes the pain you experience, called heartburn.

Occasional heartburn isn’t something to really be concerned about, but chronic heartburn should definitely be discussed with a licensed doctor to identify what is causing the discomfort since it could possibly be a more serious issue.

Some foods and drinks that may possibly trigger Heartburn and Indigestion include:

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine – coffee, soda, and some teas
  • Chocolate
  • Fried & Fatty Foods
  • Citrus Fruits
  • Tomatoes – not limited to tomatoes, this can include spaghetti sauces, pizza sauce, ketchup, and others
  • Mint
  • Garlic
  • Onions

Although not food or drink, NSAIDS – aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen increase inflammation in the gut so they are also best to avoid.

Do you notice certain foods & drinks trigger heartburn when you eat them?  If so, which one(s)?
